Coming Home, Second Chances & Queer Joy
Delilah Green Doesn’t Care
Ashley Herring Blake
Many thanks to Berkley for sending me an ARC in exchange for an honest review!
First things first:
Holy moly, I did not think any book could actually live up to the expectations set by that GLORIOUS gay cover, but boy was I wrong!!
Delilah Green Doesn’t Care is officially one of my favorite rom coms of all time! Perhaps even my favorite FAVORITE!!
Is it queer?
- a big resounding YES! The main love story is sapphic, between a bisexual, lawful good cis-woman and a chaotic neutral lesbian cis-woman. Also, unlike some books with queer MCs, the characters have friendships with other queers! Or, in the case of Delilah, bang their way through queer community!
Things I loved:
-the MCs: wild Delilah who pretends like she doesn’t care, who knows how to make a lady melt immediately, who has the most epic hair ever and takes pictures that show her secretly giant heart. And Claire, who grew up fast and has built a marvelous and stable home for her delightful daughter, who rocks a vintage dress like nobody’s business, and who sees through Delilah’s tough exterior.
-how the characters begin as tropes for each other, before developing into something else entirely. For Claire, Delilah is her best friend’s wicked stepsister. For Delilah, Claire was one of her high school mean girls. It’s a recipe for disaster, and yet… watching them gently untangle who they had been too each other, and see themselves in a new light made my whole heart melt!
-that this book doesn’t simply deliver on swoons and steaminess, no it has a whole adorable town that I would move to in a heartbeat, a rad queer coven, a thoughtful reckoning with the meaning of family and home, and characters who all grow and heal from childhood hurts.
-can the other member of the coven get a book? Iris and her rowdy BFF energy gave me life!
Things I less-than-loved:
- NOTHING!
-My only complaint is that I have to wait to read Astrid’s book! I will be bereft for the next many, many months, waiting for my next visit to Bright Falls!
Overall: if sapphic rom coms with witty banter- and a helping of “there’s only bed” is even the slightest bit your jam, run, don’t walk, to purchase this book!
